Thatched houses are remnants of primitive buildings made of wood and thatch. The use of these materials, namely wood, is due to their abundance and, at the time, they are easy to purchase and inexpensive. The cultivation of cereals, such as wheat and rye, in addition to providing sustenance to the population through the production of flour, allowed the use of straw (thatch) to cover the housing.
We are going to visit some of the houses and discover their history and experience how the Madeiran people used to live before. We will visit a house with more than 240 years, plus we will see different models of houses. We will visit the Queimadas park and also have a look at our ancient forest, the Laurissilva.
